Manchester United’s all-time top five Europa League scorers, including two current players
Manchester United return to Europa League action in the 2024/25 campaign and many players will hope to find their goalscoring touch in the competition.
The Reds secured their place in the competition through winning the FA Cup last term, when they secured a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the final.
The new format, which is fully explained here, includes two extra fixtures for Europa League clubs this year in a league table rather than the previous group-stages.
United’s opponents include: FC Twente (H), Porto (A), Fenerbahce (A), PAOK (H), Bodo/Glimt (H), Viktoria Plzen (A), Rangers (H) and Steaua Bucharest (A).
Man United’s all-time top goal scorers in UEFA Europa League
Manchester United have played in the Europa League on twelve occasions, first appearing in the 1976/77 season.
The club have won the competition once after reaching two finals. They also have a semi-final appearance as well as two quarter-final appearances.
But who are the top goalscorers for the Reds across their history in the competition? Find out below, with two current players among those in the list.
Statistics were found from data website worldfootball.net, which includes the entire history of the Europa League and its former names; the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and UEFA Cup.
#5 – Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood, David Herd, Henrikh Mkhitaryan (6 goals)
Manchester United’s fifth-highest goalscoring record in the competition, with six goals apiece, is shared by four former Reds.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan is the only one of them to win the competition with the club. He scored in the 2017 final against Ajax, alongside Paul Pogba, in a 2-0 victory.
Edinson Cavani only played one season in the competition with United and scored six as United reached the final in 2020/21, where they were beaten by Villarreal.
Meanwhile, Mason Greenwood played twice in the competition, in the 2020/21 campaign and the 2019/20 season as well.
Finally, David Herd was one of United’s best-ever goalscorers, netting 145 times for the club, and he was able to score six in the the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, now known as the Europa League, in just 11 appearances.
#4 – Anthony Martial (7 goals)
Standing alone in fourth-place on the list is Anthony Martial, who played four seasons in the competition for United and made 26 appearances, as well as winning the trophy once.
He managed to score seven goals for the club in the Europa League. One each came in 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2022/23 but he then scored four in the 2019/20 campaign.
The former striker, who moved to Greece this year, also netted an eighth goal in the competition during his loan spell at Sevilla in 2021/22.
#3 – Denis Law, Bobby Charlton (8 goals)
Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton, two of United’s greatest ever legends, were key in the clubs first-ever European Cup in 1968, however, they also played in the Europa League equivalent for the club.
Playing 10 and 11 games respectively, Law and Charlton both managed to net eight times in the competition, placing them joint-third on the list.
#2 – Bruno Fernandes (9 goals)
Second on the list is United’s current club captain Bruno Fernandes, who has appeared in the competition three times for the Reds since his 2020 move.
Fernandes scored three times in the Europa League during his debut season in 2019/20 but had also netted five times in the earlier stages of that year’s campaign for Sporting Lisbon.
When United reached the final in the following season, Fernandes scored five goals after also getting four goals in the Champions League group stages.
Finally, the Portuguese midfielder managed to secure another goal in the 2022/23 campaign to boost his tally to nine and take second-place on the list.
#1 – Marcus Rashford (13 goals)
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Marcus Rashford tops the list with 13 goals, four more than any other United player.
The English forward has played in the competition five times for the Reds and scored twice on his debut against FC Midtjylland.
He then added another two goals, including a free-kick that helped secured United’s place in the final, during the 2016/17 campaign before scoring once in the competition in 2019/20.
A further two goals came in the following campaign before he netted six times in the 2022/23 edition.
