Anthony Martial breaks silence after Man United exit, details two reasons for AEK Athens move
Anthony Martial has completed a move to AEK Athens following his summer exit from Manchester United.
Martial, 28, was released at the end of his contract at United in June after almost ten years with the club.
He joined in the summer of 2015 and quickly became popular among the United fanbase for his exciting wing play. A debut goal against Liverpool didn’t hurt either.
The Frenchman’s career eventually hit a block, mainly due to injury troubles. While Erik ten Hag rated him when fit, that did not happen often enough, and an exit made sense for all parties.
United have now got Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund as striker options at the club, while Martial had been searching for a club over the summer.
Martial breaks silence on AEK Athens move
The 28-year-old eventually decided on a somewhat surprising move to Greek club AEK Athens, with an official announcement coming this week.
According to the Daily Mail, Martial signed a £7.5 million, three-year contract and he will be hoping to turn his career around in Greece.
Breaking his silence on the reasons for his move there, Martial said that he wanted to win more silverware and bring joy to the Greek side.
“I am very happy,” Martial said during his official unveiling earlier this week.
“AEK is an opportunity for me and I will give my best to achieve things. (I want to) win trophies and bring joy to the team.”
An unfortunate ending
There is undoubtedly time on his side to turn his career around, but Martial seemed to have lost some of the magic that made him such an exciting player to begin with.
While he was a player who split opinions during his time at Old Trafford, it was quite simply an unfortunate ending for Martial at the club after he joined with the world at his feet.
