Two Europa League rules will benefit Manchester United starlets this season
Several Manchester United starlets may benefit from two rules in the Europa League this season.
The Reds have experienced a mixed start to their Premier League campaign, with just two wins from their first five matches.
A commanding 7-0 win over League One side Barnsley ensured their progression to the Carabao Cup fourth round.
Erik ten Hag’s side now turn their attention to the Europa League, another competition they are aiming to win this season.
This campaign will also provide opportunities for young talents from Carrington to potentially play and impress, with two rules in the Europa League potentially benefiting their cause.
Europa League rules that benefit Man Utd starlets
Firstly, the new format of the competition, which can be read in detail here, means that there are now eight different fixtures that the Reds will be playing in the initial phase of the competition.
This is two more than the group stage games in the previous format and will give more chances for youngsters to be involved, particularly if United start their campaign well.
Secondly, as always in the Europa League, there is more space on the bench despite the team being allowed to name five substitutes, the same as the Premier League and domestic cup competitions.
However, with 12 players able to be named on the bench, rather than nine, it is much more likely that Ten Hag can include several young talents without needing to be without some of his trusted players.
These two factors could greatly benefit the likes of Ethan Wheatley, Toby Collyer and Harry Amass, who are all on the verge of the first-team squad.
In fact, it could also provide opportunities to players who aren’t quite so close to Ten Hag’s squad but are impressing in the youth teams. Gabriele Biancheri and Jack Fletcher are two players to keep an eye on.
