Ethan Wheatley made his Manchester United debut on Wednesday night against Sheffield United, becoming the 250th academy graduate to do so.

Tom Manley became the first United academy player to make his debut in 1931. Six years later in 1937, an incredible record began with an academy player being in every single matchday squad.

87 years and the record still stands and Wheatley’s debut marked another special moment in the club’s history.

“Credit to the academy, but you also see the club is growing,” Erik ten Hag said after the 4-2 victory.

“It’s clear, we are improving, there are players coming up to the first-team.

“We are very pleased the 250th academy player made his debut tonight.”

Wheatley was introduced in the 90th minute of the game, coming on for Rasmus Højlund who had just scored United’s fourth of the game.

Fortunately for the youngster, who had scored a brace in the Under-18s Premier League cup final the night before, there were nine additional minutes on the board.

Speaking after the game, Wheatley explained that Bruno Fernandes was desperate to provide him with an iconic debut goal.

“Bruno pulled me to the side and told me I’ve got nine minutes to try to get you a goal.” the teenager told club reporters.

Whilst the Portuguese midfielder was not able to help Wheatley provide the magic moment, it was still a major accomplishment after an incredible season for the youth team.

“It’s an honour to make my debut and that number 250,” added Wheatley. “There were a bit of nerves, but as soon as I was stripped and ready to go, I was excited. It’s not been a bad 24 hours.”
