The Premier League have delayed a rule change that will impact Manchester United and other clubs this season.

Manchester United have had a mixed start to the new season, winning just two of their opening five Premier League fixtures.

Whilst an impressive 7-0 victory in the Carabao Cup against Barnsley provided some confidence, the latest result saw Erik ten Hag’s side draw 1-1 with FC Twente in the Europa League.

There is clearly a lot of work to do for United to improve. They are yet to find their goalscoring touch, having missed the most big chances of any team in the league.

With an upcoming game against Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend, United will be desperate to try and provide a statement result against the London-based side.

Interestingly, despite the slow start to the campaign so far, United have avoided any major VAR controversy in their games. Perhaps the only big call was Lisandro Martínez avoiding a red card against Crystal Palace.

However, that will make fans feel that the controversial decisions are only around the corner for Ten Hag and his side.

Premier League delay semi-automated offsides

There were many goals last season where United were ruled offside through VAR intervention. Perhaps the most well-remembered one being Alejandro Garnacho’s goal against Arsenal.

Ten Hag has brought the incident up in press conferences several times since then, believing that the result – United would have led 2-1 going into the final minutes of the game, instead they ended up losing 1-3 – could have changed his team’s fortunes.

He initially believed that the lines drawn by the VAR were incorrect, an opinion echoed by several other managers–and fans–at one point or another.

This all seemed set to be squashed by the Premier League’s belated decision to introduce semi-automated offside technology that has worked so efficiently in the Champions League and the 2022 World Cup.

Reports in the summer claimed that while the technology would not be in place for the beginning of the new campaign, it would be ready for around October time.

According to a new report from Sky Sports, the Premier League have delayed the introduction of semi-automated offside technology.

It was explained that the League do not want to introduce the technology without being completely happy with it.

Sky added that, instead, the World Cup-tested technology could be implemented between December and February instead of October.
