Owen Hargreaves slams two Man United players after FC Twente draw in Europa League
Two Manchester United players have been slammed following the club’s 1-1 draw against FC Twente in the Europa League.
In Manchester United’s Europa League opener, Erik ten Hag endured a frustrating 1-1 draw against his former boyhood club, FC Twente.
Christian Eriksen netted a brilliant goal in the first half, but a momentary lapse in focus from the Danish midfielder allowed FC Twente to equalise with 20 minutes remaining.
Despite bringing on Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Højlund to strengthen the attack, United couldn’t turn their late pressure into a winning goal, ending the match in a disappointing draw.
Two Man Utd players slammed vs FC Twente
It was an underwhelming performance, particularly in the second half, and the goal conceded displayed a catalogue of reasons for that.
The pressure was poor initially, with several United players then diving in prematurely. In the end, two players received more criticism than most for their part in the goal.
Owen Hargreaves, TNT Sports pundit and former United midfielder, believes that Eriksen had to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper in the moment he received possession, instead, he gave away a sloppy turnover.
“Eriksen made a mistake a player of his calibre would not normally make,” former Old Trafford midfielder Hargreaves told TNT Sport. “And, at this level, you are going to get punished.
“You see Erikson there, just pass it back to Onana.”
Meanwhile, the United goalkeeper did not cover himself in glory, with Hargreaves suggesting that he will be thinking that he should have covered his near-post better for the goal.
Onana took the bait as the Twente goalscorer Sam Lammers opened his body up before smashing the ball towards the near-post.
“Onana will probably look back and think; ‘Maybe I should have covered the near-post’,” added Hargreaves. “It is a couple of mistakes and they add up to a moment like that.”
