“I would say…” Ole Gunnar Solskjær responds after questions about Manchester United return
Ole Gunnar Solskjær has made an admission after being asked if he would want to retake charge of Manchester United after his dismissal in 2021.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær‘s tenure as Manchester United manager, from December 2018 to November 2021, began with an impressive turnaround, marked by a string of victories and a revitalized team spirit after a poor start to the season under Jose Mourinho.
His initial success included a memorable Champions League comeback against PSG and a more attacking style of play that won praise. Solskjær’s focus on developing young talent and improving the team’s offensive output was evident, with players like Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes thriving under his guidance.

However, consistency proved elusive during his tenure, with fluctuating performances and notable tactical shortcomings. Despite achieving a third-place finish in the Premier League in 2019-20 and a second-place finish in 2020-21, the team struggled in crucial matches, including a Europa League final loss to Villarreal.
Ultimately, a series of poor results and a heavy defeat to Watford led to Solskjær’s dismissal in November 2021, marking the end of a period characterised by promising moments and significant challenges.
Following Solskjear’s dismissal, Ralf Rangnick took over as interim coach for the remainder of the season, and Erik ten Hag was hired full-time in April 2022.
However, following rumours surrounding Ten Hag’s future, Solskjær was asked at the Olso business summit in Norway if he would consider retaking charge of United in the future.
“If your family asks you, you say yes every day of the week,” he admitted, as quoted by Sport Witness. “It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have, but I would say yes, of course.”
The United great was also asked about managing the Norwegian national side one day, a position currently held by his former international teammate Ståle Solbakken.
“I am a proud Norwegian, and of course if the question arises, when Ståle decides to give up, I will happily engage in discussions. I am a proud Norwegian and proud of where I come from.”
