Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Benjamin Sesko’s potential transfer to either Manchester United or Newcastle United, with both clubs in “the fight” for the Slovenian centre forward
Manchester United’s search for a centre forward has been ongoing for almost the entire summer after Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee made it clear that United would need one going into next season.
Both of Rúben Amorim’s senior strikers struggled in front of goal last season, with just a combined 17 goals between the two, and young centre forward Chido Obi is not ready to be given a starting spot next season.
Liam Delap was the first target for Jason Wilcox and the recruitment team, but he decided to join Chelsea to reunite with his former coach Enzo Maresca, who he worked with at Manchester City.
Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have both joined the Red Devils, but it appears that both will play as attacking midfielders behind the centre forward, potentially meaning that a more creative option up front could be better.
However, the recruitment team appear to have their heart set on RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko or Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins if they are to sign a centre forward.
Romano gives Sesko update with Newcastle interest
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Sesko’s transfer situation, with both United and Newcastle United interested in the Slovenian striker.
“The fight is ongoing,” said the transfer guru. “The fight between Manchester United and Newcastle is ongoing, with different options, with different strategies.”
“Newcastle are ready, if Benjamin Sesko calls and says ‘Ok, I’m coming to join you,’ Newcastle are ready to pay what Leipzig want. Newcastle have already spoke to all the people close to Sesko, so they are ready to pay what Leipzig wants and ready to pay what the player wants.”
“On the other side, Manchester United are working on this deal financially to understand whether thay can make it happen or not, so Benjamin Sesko is a big name on the list of Manchester United, also Ollie Watkins.”
“Last week, Manchester United had direct contact with Aston Villa, as I told you, they spoke about Dibu [Emiliano] Martinez some more and they also spoke about Ollie Watkins.”
“Villa want to keep Ollie Watkins so it’s not an easy deal, while for Sesko it’s already accepted internally at Leipzig, that he’s probably going to leave this summer.”
Watkins or Sesko? It’s United’s decision
Romano continued to speak on United’s striker situation: “Man United have two different options – an experienced Premier League proven player [Watkins], or a big talent, a gem like Benjamin Sesko.”
“For Sesko, they made contact with the player camp, they spoke about the project, they spoke about the vision. Now it is on Manchester United to decide to go big, if they can do it financially, or if they will turn their attention to a different striker like Ollie Watkins.”
“Sesko will now take his time to consider all his options, to decide what he wants to do with Newcastle with Manchester United, many calls from Saudi [Arabia], but the player wants to stay in Europe.”
It appears United have to be quick if they want to secure the signing of Sesko, but the question has to be asked: why hasn’t he already agreed to go to Newcastle if they are ready to pay? Perhaps, Sesko is attracted to Old Trafford in the same way Cunha and Mbeumo were.
