Manchester United returned to Carrington for pre-season training at the beginning of this week and there have been several shirt number changes spotted.

The Reds are starting their preparations for the 2024/25 campaign with a busy pre-season schedule ahead.

Next week, Erik ten Hag’s side will play Rosenberg in their opening clash, followed by a trip to Scotland to play Rangers. They will then travel to the United States for three further games.

As always, while the players will be working hard ahead of a busy campaign, fans will be eager to see which players have grabbed new shirt numbers.

Willy Kambwala: #53 to #32

Willy Kambwala had his breakthrough campaign at Old Trafford last term and has since been rewarded with an upgraded shirt number.

Having worn no.53 last season, the French defender will now occupy no.32, previously worn by the likes of Carlos Tevez and Victor Valdez.

Harry Amass: #70 to #41

Harry Amass is one of the most exciting talents in the United academy and is expected to play a role in the first-team next season.

The left-back appeared several times on the bench towards the end of last campaign, and his new shirt number suggests an anticipated more prominent role.

Amass moves from no.71 to no.41, most notably worn by Federico Macheda when he was a youngster at the club.

Rhys Bennett #66 to #51

Another defender rising through the academy is Rhys Bennett. He experienced difficulties on loan at Stockport County last term but is looking to try and impress during pre-season at United.

His shirt number has been updated from no.66 last season to no.51 this term. It was last occupied by goalkeeper Matej Kovar, who departed for Bayer Leverkusen last season.

Maxi Oyedele – #68 to #59

Maxi Oyedele was another player to suffer an unsuccessful loan campaign last term but the highly-rated midfielder is still an exciting prospect.

Oyedele’s shirt number change is somewhat minimal, from no.68 to no.59, but he will be keen to prove himself to Ten Hag with the club’s current slim midfield options.

He could be an outside shout to watch out for in and around the first team in the coming year.

Ethan Williams – #82 to #73

Ethan Williams was one of the most exciting players to watch in the treble-winning Under-18s side last season.

Williams netted 17 times last term and also registered nine assists. He has moved from no.82 to no.73 – Kobbie Mainoo’s old number when he made his first-team debut.

Ethan Wheatley – #84 to #36

Ethan Wheatley became the 250th academy graduate at United last season when he made his first-team debut against Sheffield United.

The 18-year-old scored in the final of both competitions the under-18s reached last term and regularly trained with the first team.

He was rewarded with a big shirt number update from no.84 to no.36, formally worn by Anthony Elanga, and will likely get the chance to impress in pre-season this summer.
