Frank Lampard delivers interesting Kobbbie Mainoo assessment after England reach Euro 2024 semi-final
Frank Lampard delivered an interesting assessment on Kobbie Mainoo after England reached the semi-final of Euro 2024.
Mainoo, 19, was in the lineup once again for England, becoming the second-youngest Three Lions player to start a European Championship quarter-final behind Wayne Rooney.
Alongside Declan Rice in the midfield, the United teenager was once again a bright spark for Gareth Southgate’s side, with many claiming he was England’s best player in the first half.
He was brought off later in the second half, with England winning the game on penalties after a tense extra-time period.
Speaking at half-time on BBC, former England and Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard provided an interesting assessment of what Mainoo brings to the team.
Lampard said: “We spoke before the game about England looking a little bit rigid, a little bit positional, and that’s the main thing for me.
“The system gives them their balance, but within that, good players, even though he [Mainoo] just turned 19, know to work off other good players.
“And now you’re seeing him and Phil Foden, particularly in that half, and they go, ‘OK, Phil, you’re dropping deep, OK, I’ll go and stand behind the midfield’.”
It is something that has benefited England since the 19-year-old came into the team. He recognises space and where to position himself better than most seasoned veterans.
“Together and ready for what’s next. Onto the semis,” wrote Mainoo on Instagram after the game.
England will face the Netherlands in the semi-final of the competition, and the winner of that tie will play France or Spain in the final next Sunday.
