Premier League manager would be ‘a great fit’ to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, says pundit
One Premier League manager has been told that he would be ‘a great fit’ to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United if he was sacked.
Erik ten Hag has endured a challenging start to the season, with Manchester United managing just three wins from their opening eight matches in all competitions.
Consecutive 3-0 defeats at Old Trafford to Liverpool and Tottenham in the Premier League have added to the pressure on the manager.
Despite considering other managerial candidates last summer, INEOS opted to extend Ten Hag’s contract until 2026, showing their support to the Dutchman.
However, his current position as manager seems in the balance with two crucial away fixtures against FC Porto and Aston Villa approaching.
Should the decision makers make the call to sack Ten Hag in the coming weeks, there are not many outstanding candidates available.
Ruud van Nistelrooy is an option to take over on an interim basis but available managers like Gareth Southgate or Graham Potter are not exactly inspiring.
United may look to tempt active managers out of their current roles, leaning on the lure of them leading the team at Old Trafford under the new and improved regime.
One of those has been reported as Eddie Howe, with the Newcastle boss rumoured to be an option the club are considering. He had a close relationship with Dan Ashworth when he was at the Magpies.
Darren Bent, former Premier League striker, is in favour of this potential move and believes Howe would be a ‘great fit’ at United but is not confident that he would depart Newcastle mid-season.
“Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe have a good relationship,” Bent told talkSPORT this week. “I think he would be a great fit.
“I don’t think he will leave, but he would be a great fit.”
