Erik ten Hag suggests INEOS will “reward” Man United star with new contract
Erik ten Hag has suggested that the new INEOS leadership at Old Trafford will “reward” one Manchester United player with a new contract.
The Reds have had a mixed start to the new Premier League season, winning two of their opening five games, having drawn 0-0 against Crystal Palace in their most recent fixture.
A thumping 7-0 win against Barnsley ensured progression to the Carabao Cup fourth-round last week.
While things are not yet perfect for Erik ten Hag’s side, there have been a number of players who have started the campaign well.
Ten Hag suggests new contract coming for Man Utd star
Last term, there were no long-term contracts agreed upon during the season, with the INEOS leadership looking to get settled into the club before making any big decisions on existing players.
Now that the likes of Omar Berrada, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox are settled in their positions at Old Trafford, there is one contract that they seem keen to extend.
Kobbie Mainoo still has multiple years on his current deal but after a brilliant debut campaign in the first-team last term, he is set to be rewarded.
This has been claimed by multiple reports and an agreement could come later in the season.
When asked by Sky Sports about the 19-year-old midfielder’s contract situation, Ten Hag admitted that he thinks the club will “reward” Mainoo and that discussions around contract extensions need to be had when a player is progressing like the Academy graduate is.
“I think we will reward him. As a club, as a team, we are so pleased with his development,” the manager replied.
“For us, and for him, the togetherness will keep this process going and the leadership in the club have to talk about this and make a decision about this.
“Of course, we do that in cooperation but I think, yeah, that is a thought. We will always have to discuss when players are progressing that well, then you have to dicuss what we will do.
“When we have news, we will tell you.”
Mainoo’s performances are no surprise
It is starting to feel that Mainoo’s solid performance in the engine room are being taken for granted amongst the United fanbase, simply because we are getting used to his consistent level.
He continues to produce brilliant moments on the ball and seems to be one of United’s best players every time he is on the pitch.
It was good to see his minutes managed against Barnsley, as Ten Hag will need to keep him fresh throughout the campaign.
