INEOS’ transfer mistake slammed after Man United’s biggest issue shown vs Crystal Palace
INEOS’ transfer mistake at Manchester United has been slammed following the club’s 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
The Reds delivered one of their most dominant performances of the season against Crystal Palace.
However, despite controlling the game and creating numerous opportunities, Erik ten Hag’s side couldn’t find the back of the net and had to settle for a draw.
This result leaves United with only seven points from their first five Premier League games, a frustrating outcome given the glimpses of potential shown.
INEOS transfer mistake slammed
After two games of the team taking their chances in front of goal, it was back to the same story at Selhurst Park. It is concerning how often United fail to take their chances.
This was a topic of concern for BBC pundits during Match of the Day, with Danny Murphy and Ashley Williams criticising the transfer business made in the summer.
While INEOS were largely praised for their five first-team signings, four of those players were defensive-minded additions and Joshua Zirkzee is not a known goalscorer.
They suggest that the new leadership team needed to bring in a trusted goalscorer considering finishing chances was an issue last term as well.
Danny Murphy said: “I think they made some decent signings defence but they didn’t address the shortage of goals.
“They scored joint lowest amount of goals in the top half last season and they bought in Zirkzee, the only attacking player who is a young lad and not a goalscorer.”
Ashley Williams added: “Is Zirkzee going to get you 20 goals a season? He’s the only attacking addition. That’s what they were lacking last season. Palace were there for the taking. United actually played really well.
“They ended up nearly losing the game! It’s going to be the same thing as last season. Who’s going to score goals for them?”
The stats are concerning
The statistics so far this season unfortunately back up those comments, with United topping the Premier League for ‘Big Chances Missed’.
In fact, with 17, the Reds have missed five more big chances than any other club in the division. Aston Villa and Liverpool have both missed 12 each in joint second place.
While it is a positive that United are getting in the position to score goals, things need to click on a consistent basis.
