“It baffles me…” – MUTV pundit delivers harsh verdict on huge moment that impacted Erik ten Hag
One MUTV pundit has stated that he was “baffled” by one decision that looks like it could have a huge impact on Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.
The Reds have faced a difficult start to the new campaign, winning just three of their opening eight games in all competitions.
Despite this, there seemed to be some positives surrounding Erik ten Hag’s side before the last week.
A midweek draw against Dutch side FC Twente in the Europa League was followed on by a disgraceful display at home in a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Now, the pressure appears to be building for Ten Hag, who will reportedly stay in charge for upcoming games against FC Porto and Aston Villa, but he future beyond that is uncertain.
Ben Thornley’s harsh verdict on Bruno red card overturn
While every fan and pundit will agree that United were absolutely terrible with 11 men on the pitch against Spurs, there’s no doubting that the game was only completely lost once Bruno Fernandes was sent off.
We’ve seen Ten Hag’s side and other teams get wins from games in similar ways and while it might have only papered over cracks for the manager, it could have put three important points on the board for the club.
Instead, United got none and Ten Hag is under more pressure than ever. The decision from the Premier League to overturn Fernandes’ red card has since brought mixed responses.
It is positive for United to have their captain available for the next three Premier League games but begs the question how the decision was able to stand in the first place with VAR in operations.
Asked about the decision being changed during MUTV’s coverage of the Under-21s game this week, Ben Thornley expressed his frustration with the officials.
“Don’t get me started on that,” he said. “I don’t understand how that decision couldn’t have been made at the time. That’s what baffles me.”
Fernandes will now be available for selection against Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham.
