Rúben Amorim is said to be a “huge fan” of one Serie A star, and Manchester United have now learned their chances of signing him.
Manchester United haven’t had a good start to the season. Despite a positive pre-season under Rúben Amorim, United now sit 10th in the Premier League, with Liverpool to face away from home on Sunday afternoon.
Many thought that the summer signings – most notably Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško – would help United push on from their dismal 15th place finish last season, but struggles still remain in other areas of the pitch: Jason Wilcox must act in the January transfer window to solve some of the problems.
United’s biggest problem is in central midfield; Amorim is struggling to find a combination in the engine room that works both with and without the ball. Bruno Fernandes appears to be the guaranteed starter, with Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro fighting for the spot next to him.
Kobbie Mainoo – who started the Euros final in 2024 – has been left on the bench and without a recognised spot in the side, although he could eventually look to fill in alongside Fernandes if he earns Amorim’s trust.
Another problem area for United is at wing-back. Amad, Diogo Dalot, and Noussair Mazraoui are all battling for minutes on the right side, while only Patrick Dorgu can play on the left, with Diego Leon yet to make his debut.
Amorim wants Dimarco but transfer is difficult
Federico Dimarco would be the perfect profile to join United at left-wing-back due to his attacking nature and experience in the role, unlike Dorgu and Leon, who are both still so young.
As per TuttoSport: “Rúben Amorim is a huge fan of his and would like to sign him at Manchester United,” with the report going on to say that Amorim tried to sign the Italian last summer.
While it does say United may try again for Dimarco, the 27-year-old “intends to stay at Inter” so convincing him to make the move to Old Trafford could be difficult.
If Amorim is set on signing the Italy international, getting back into the Champions League will be crucial, as Dimarco will not want to drop out of Europe’s elite competition.
Signing another left-wing-back would be beneficial for Dorgu as he could learn from a more experienced player, but Dimarco is unlikely to be the man to join.
United should use Shaw as a wing-back
If Amorim wants to give Dorgu more time to improve before classing him as a regular starter, Luke Shaw should start as the left-wing-back when Lisandro Martínez returns to full fitness.
While Shaw has proved he is a capable central defender, he excels when he’s allowed to overlap the left-sided attacker and put crosses into the box. He could make his return to this role against Liverpool this weekend.
Dorgu would not be the only beneficiary from Shaw’s change in role because Šeško would also reap the rewards. The Slovenian has already proven he can tower over opposition defenders, and more crosses from Shaw would only increase his goal tally.
The main concern for changing Shaw’s position would be his struggle with injuries, but with just the Premier League to play for until after Christmas, Shaw should be fine to play in a slightly more intense position, especially when Dorgu will still be pushing for a starting place.
