Manchester United are said to be monitoring Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka after he has fallen from Thomas Tuchel’s pecking order.

Manchester United are looking to sign a new midfielder this summer to compete with the likes of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro.

With both Fred, Donny van de Beek, and Scott McTominay all being considered for sales and no conclusion on if United will make Marcel Sabitzer’s move permanent, Erik ten Hag will be looking to recruit new midfielders in order to strengthen the core of his squad.

According to a report by Sky Germany, United are ‘closely monitoring’ Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka ahead of the summer transfer window officially opening.

The report claims that although Goretzka does not want to leave Bayern Munich, he may have to accept that a transfer away from the club is inevitable.

It is said that one reason why Goretzka’s department from Bayern Munich may be unavoidable is due to their targeting of Declan Rice. Bayern are said to have made Rice, who is also a Manchester United target, their No. 1 midfield priority this window, and will need to let another midfielder go should they sign the Englishman.

It is said that a reason why Goretzka may be the one considered for a summer transfer is that his standing at Bayern has diminished ever since Tuchel substituted Goretzka in the 71st minute of their final Bundesliga campaign, even though the midfielder only entered into the fixture at half-time.

“There are many top clubs abroad who have him on their radar, one of them is Manchester United,” described German transfer expert Florian Plettenberg. “They are watching his situation very closely and when they realize that Goretzka really has to go, United picks up the phone.”
