“Very happy…” Ex-Manchester United player wants to return under Erik ten Hag this summer
One of Manchester United’s ex-players is looking to return to Old Trafford this summer, with Erik ten Hag needing fresh recruitments in defence.
Last season, injuries plagued Manchester United‘s back line, with Erik ten Hag‘s men conceding over 80 goals across all competitions. This left them out of the Champions League at Christmas, and eighth in the Premier League table come the end of May.
This summer, they have already made a number of changes to the back line, with Willy Kambwala and Raphaël Varane departing while 18-year-old Leny Yoro has joined Ten Hag’s ranks as a first-team player for the future.

However, the club have now turned their attention to signing new players in the full-back areas, with players being considered on both flanks.
Despite the club having two first-team left-backs in Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, last season proved that neither player can be reliable, with both suffering long-term injuries across the campaign, meaning the club need consistency.
United had Sergio Reguilón on loan last season but cut the deal short after six months when it was claimed in January that both Malacia and Shaw would return to the team – but this did not happen, with Diogo Dalot instead covering as an auxiliary in the position.
Reguilón was a fan-favourite during his short stint at Old Trafford, and many would be happy to see the Spaniard return for 2024/25. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has explained that although the 27-year-old would love to do so, there have so far been no contacts.
“What is important to say is that at the moment there is still nothing advanced or nothing concrete between Tottenham and Man United for Reguilón,” Romano stated on his YouTube channel.
“Nothing is really advanced on this one. But in general, Sergio Reguilón was very happy at Manchester United. So if tomorrow Man United decide to return for Sergio Reguilón, the player will be keen on the move.
“He loved his time at Manchester United. It was a short time, but he was very happy with the club, with the tactical idea, with all the points involved in Manchester United.”
Romano went on to confirm that there had been no contact between United and either Tottenham or the player himself regarding Reguilón’s transfer, as the club’s priorities are on singing players in different positions for now.
But Romano reiterated that the club wants to sign a new left-back, so it may be a transfer to watch as the summer transfer window reaches its climax in August.
