Manchester United suffer transfer setback as Champions League club confirm departure
Manchester United have suffered a transfer setback as Champions League winners Real Madrid have confirmed a departure that could impact the Reds.
United are looking to strengthen their backline this summer following the departure of Raphaël Varane.
It has been confirmed by Real Madrid that Nacho will be leaving after spending 23 years at the club.
The Spanish defender made 364 appearances for Los Blancos following his senior debut in 2012. He is now expected to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah.
Unfortunately for United, this move could further impact their slim chances of signing teenage sensation Leny Yoro now that Madrid have a space in their squad to fill.
Nacho was an integral part of Carlo Ancelotti’s side last term, as several others suffered injuries. Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni was also used in central defence at points in the season.
Prior reports suggested that while Madrid was Yoro’s favourite option, they could’ve waited a year to sign him on a free contract.
This could’ve allowed the likes of United to try and tempt the Lille defender with a move this summer. However, following Nacho’s exit, all signs point to Madrid trying to make the move happen in the coming months.
United had reportedly tabled a bid for the 18-year-old, which was swiftly rejected. The Reds view him as a ‘unique market opportunity’.
However, it seems their priority is to convince Everton to lower their transfer demands for Jarrad Branthwaite after their opening bid of £43 million was rejected.
