Manchester United may see a defender return as Erik ten Hag prepares his side to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Following a frustrating 1-1 draw with FC Twente in the Europa League, Manchester United are gearing up for Premier League action as they host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag‘s side has had a rocky start to the league season, securing only two victories from their first five matches and netting just five goals.

Tottenham have faced similar challenges, also winning two of their initial five games. They are currently level with United on seven points but hold a slight advantage due to a better goal difference.

In the last campaign, United suffered unprecedented injury numbers, but the list of those on the treatment table has been significantly reduced this season.

Regarding those unavailable for the upcoming tie against Spurs, the three who will not feature are Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, and Tyrell Malacia.

While Yoro and Malacia are not expected back for at least another month, Ten Hag explained that he thinks fans may be able to see Shaw return to action before the October international break.

“I think it’s probably [before the break], but I can’t say I’m 100 per cent sure,” Ten Hag said earlier this week ahead of United’s draw with Twente.

“The plan is just to be back before, but as I say, I can’t say this 100 per cent for sure. It could also be shortly after the break.”

Regarding Yoro, reports have suggested that the defender is targeting the fixture against Arsenal on 3 December as the one he wants to make a return to the first team.

In more positive news, Mason Mount returned to action after suffering a hamstring problem last month, playing 11 minutes on Wednesday evening. Ten Hag also confirmed on Thursday evening that there were no knocks from the game against Twente.

Rasmus Højlund made his second season appearance, coming off the bench in the last two fixtures. Having scored against Tottenham last season, Ten Hag may look to use Højlund from the start on Sunday, but this is far from confirmed.

Further, United may welcome Victor Lindelöf back to the matchday squad. The Swedish defender returned to first-team training earlier this week but was not involved in the squad that faced Twente.

However, he may be fit enough to rejoin the team at Old Trafford on Sunday, although Ten Hag has admitted that this is unlikely.
