Amad Diallo looks set to leave Manchester United this summer after a lack of game time under Erik ten Hag despite his recent Old Trafford heroics.

Last season, Amad Diallo lit up the Championship with Sunderland, establishing himself as a brilliant attacking player both centrally and on the right wing – and when he rejoined Manchester United, fans were excited.

However, he suffered an unfortunate knee injury against Arsenal during pre-season in July 2023, which ruled him out for several months. The Ivorian international only returned to Erik ten Hag‘s team at the end of December that year.

Amad turned into a hero last month, scoring a brilliant winning goal against Liverpool during a dramatic 4-3 triumph over Liverpool, turning him into a firm fan-favourite. However, he has not played a single minute of football since then and has totalled just 98 across the season so far.

After what many hoped would be a breakthrough season for the winger, he has not had the opportunities that many think he deserves.

Amad’s message to Ten Hag

In January, there were rumours that Amad may be sent on loan again in order to regain his fitness and first-team experience. But both the player and the club, along with Ten Hag, agreed that he would stay at Old Trafford.

In an interview, he sent a message to Ten Hag, telling the Dutchman that he wants to play football.

“Everyone does deserve to play, you know, but I was concentrating to come back quickly (from injury) to the team and to help the team,” he said in January. “So it’s difficult when you watch the game and you are not there, but you need to be positive to hope you get the win that day.”

He continued: “I want to play more football and to come back here (to Old Trafford) to play football again. If the manager puts me on the pitch, I will fight for the team, to help the team.

“I’ve come back [from injury] stronger, I’ve come back with more motivation to help the team.

“I love football, you know. You need to enjoy every game, you do not need to make more pressure in your head. You need to enjoy the game, but you need to help the team to defend, to attack, so when I’m back, I hope to do this for the team.”

Set to leave this summer

However, these minutes have not materialised, and now Manchester Evening News reporter Steve Railson believes that Amad looks set to leave United this summer.

“Nobody would blame Amad for pushing for a move away this summer, and, in truth, that seems like the best option for him because he’s played just 98 minutes since his return from injury,” Railson said.

“Although he might not be good enough to currently start for United, his potential is obvious and that will only be unlocked by regularly starting games. Amad looks set to be on his travels once the curtains are brought down on the campaign.”
