Manchester United made a huge transfer mistake when they missed out on a ‘special’ transfer target, according to club legend Peter Schmeichel.

Schmeichel, 60, believes that Erik ten Hag made a huge mistake when he signed the wrong winger from his former club Ajax for the Old Trafford club.

The Reds added Antony to Ten Hag’s squad during his first transfer window in charge for a fee of just over £85 million. The Brazilian had played just two seasons in the Eredivisie before his big-money move.

He scored just once in 51 appearances for the club in 2023, a frankly terrible record, and has received major criticism from the United fanbase.

Meanwhile, West Ham signed Antony’s former teammate Mohammed Kudus in the summer for around £35 million. He has 10 goals and one assist so far this term.

“There’s something about that boy,” Schmeichel said of Kudus.

“He’s special. I don’t get it if he (Ten Hag) knows these boys very well, why did he pick Antony ahead of Kudus?

“Antony doesn’t give much to the team. He frustrates his teammates. It’s really frustrating. He’s had an opportunity for a long time,” the United icon added when speaking to Super Sport.

“This is a player that hasn’t scored this season, he’s not made an assist and he’s not scored, it’s like he’s not really understanding the game.

“As a winger, there are certain things you expect them to do, go into this area [the byline] and cross the ball on your right foot, but he doesn’t.”

United are struggling on the right wing, with Antony underperforming and Jadon Sancho still unavailable for selection.

Amad returned from a five-month injury layout last time out as The Reds lost against Nottingham Forest. He could become an option for Ten Hag on the right side.
