Gary Neville has explained that there are four deals that Manchester United should not have made after their lost 2-1 against Nottingham Forest.

After jubilation following Manchester United‘s 3-2 comeback victory against Aston Villa, Erik ten Hag‘s men fell to a dismal defeat against Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening to end their 2023 on a sour note.

The result has seen them stay seventh in the Premier League table, but they could fall as far as ninth by the next time they play, with Newcastle United and Brighton yet to feature in this game week.

Speaking after the loss, Gary Neville has slammed the signings of four players under Ten Hag, explaining that United should have said no to the deals considering the transfer fees involved.

“That’s the one that’s going to stand out on Erik ten Hag, that £85 million on Antony,” Neville told Sky Sports after the loss at the City Ground. “He’s nowhere near that level. But even £70 million on Højlund is a lot of money, £55 million on Mount, £60 million for Casemiro on a five-year deal.

“There’s a lot of deals you can start to look at with a glass half empty. If you look at recruitment, I get the point about managers but gone are the days when your dad (Harry Redknapp) or Sir Alex Ferguson would travel to watch other players.

“They would’ve been like a chief scout, head of academy and recruitment. Sir Alex used to watch games at night, the academy in the morning then go to the first-team game in the afternoon.

“There are coaches at these clubs now where they come in for one or two years and don’t think ‘I’ve got to get these players right’. They are solely focused on coaching the team.

“Manchester United’s recruitment department can’t have watched Antony and signed him for £85million. It looks like they’ve allowed Ten Hag to overrule him. The owners have got to say no.”
