Rio Ferdinand has called for Manchester United to reverse their decision on one of their summer striker transfer targets.
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both struggled for Manchester United this season, especially when they have played as the centre forward.
In truth, United haven’t had a consistent striker since Edinson Cavani under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, but even he struggled with injuries.
Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo have all tried to nail down the striker spot, but they have all failed for various reasons, whether its injuries or just a lack of form.
So, with Hojlund and Zirkzee both struggling up front, a new striker signing is needed if United want to return to the top under Ruben Amorim.
Liam Delap looks the closest to joining the Red Devils in the summer, but Rio Ferdinand doesn’t believe that he should be the primary target.
Ferdinand prefers Osimhen to Delap
Despite David Ornstein saying that United are not interested in Victor Osimhen this summer, Ferdinand believes that the Nigerian striker would be the better option at Old Trafford.
“Forget Delap’s ability, potential, whatever you want to say about him. His quality as a player, it’s not about that right now for Man United,” said Ferdinand on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel.
“I think they need experience in there. Someone who knows how to score and someone that these younger guys can learn off.”
Ferdinand later added that he believes Højlund won’t be the starting striker next season if the Denmark international stays at the club.
“Hojlund needs help, he doesn’t need a competitor,” he continued. “You need someone who can come in who he can go ‘listen take the pressure off me. You’re going to be the main guy. I’m going to learn a little bit in the background and take my chances when they come’.”
United should focus on Delap
Despite Ferdinand’s beliefs, United should stay clear of Osimhen and focus on Ipswich Town’s Delap in the summer transfer window.
Jason Wilcox previously worked with Delap while working at Manchester City and therefore knows significantly more about him than he does about Osimhen.

Additionally, Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League means that Delap would only cost the Red Devils £30 million, while Osimhen would cost United upwards of £55 million.
This summer will be crucial for Amorim, many signings need to be brought in, so where money can be saved, it should be.
