Fabrizio Romano has explained why Manchester United could make a surprise transfer move after their decision on Sofyan Amrabat was confirmed.

Amrabat, 27, spent the last season on loan at United, and he excelled towards the end of the campaign, including in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

After the club confirmed the signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, it is now expected that they begin to strengthen the midfield.

Of course, Amrabat seemed to be an option due to a buy option in his loan contract. However, various reporters have since confirmed that the club will not take up this option.

On the surface, this seemed to rule out an Old Trafford return for the Moroccan. However, Fabrizio Romano has included important context that suggests a move could still be on.

The Italian reporter has explained that United are still interested in the midfielder and are open to discussing different terms with Fiorentina.

“Manchester United have informed Fiorentina that they will not trigger the €20m buy option clause for Sofyan Amrabat,” the journalist wrote in his Daily Briefing.

“However, Man United remain interested in Amrabat and would be willing to discuss different conditions, as Erik ten Hag likes him. There’s also interest from other clubs.”

This coincides with prior reports from Corriere dello Sport, which stated that the Reds could make a move for Amrabat in the coming weeks after it was claimed a fee of £13m would be enough to sign the midfielder.

There are also links to Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte, with personal terms agreed between the player and United.

Although, with the likes of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay potentially heading for the exit door, it seems that more than one midfield signing may be needed.

On the other hand, a player such as Toby Collyer from the club’s academy could push his way into the first-team squad after impressing so far in pre-season.
