Manchester United face a tough test against Brentford on Wednesday evening as they look to bounce back from their 2-0 loss against Newcastle.

United produced one of their worst performances of the season at St James’ Park on Sunday but are quick in action again at Old Trafford with three points being crucial in their top-four battle.

Erik ten Hag’s side slipped out of the top four for the first time since before the World Cup, however, they still remain level on points with both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle in fourth and third place respectively. United also have two games in hand on Spurs.

Despite the fact that The Reds have continued to excel in cup competitions, they are now winless in three Premier League games – their worst run in the league so far this season – and need a victory against The Bees to get back on track.

The early season 4-0 loss at the Gtech Community Stadium was dreadful for Ten Hag and his side. It did start the turnaround of form which has led to The Reds winning silverware, with the opportunity for more.

Brentford have lost just once in the league since the restart post-World Cup and will be a tough opponent for United.

Christian Eriksen, who played for The Bees last season, is on his road to recovery from an ankle injury and could return to the squad on the weekend against Everton after Ten Hag confirmed he returned to team training on Tuesday – but this fixture comes slightly too soon for The Dane.

Meanwhile, Casemiro is serving the third of his four-game ban. Fred, Marcel Sabitzer and Scott McTominay remain fit in the absence of the two star midfielders.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka missed out on the visit to Newcastle due to illness but returned to training ahead of this tie. He’s likely to replace Diogo Dalot in the side.

At the other end of the pitch, Anthony Martial returned to action last time out as a second-half substitute. Despite the result, the Frenchman impressed in his short cameo and came closest to scoring for United. Following his appearance from the bench, Martial could be set for his first start since January.

The likes of Donny van de Beek, Alejandro Garnacho and Tom Heaton remain out of action with injuries.

Brentford team news

Shandon Baptiste returns from suspension to boost the visitors’ midfield options, whilst Keane Lewis-Potter and Kristoffer Ajer remain absent.

Vitaly Janelt has also been suffering from a knee injury but could be back in time to make the travelling squad.
