Manchester United are set to miss out on one of their potential Andre Onana replacements after an official offer from West Ham for the goalkeeper.
Andre Onana’s injury has significantly impacted Manchester United’s preparations for the Premier League season, particularly their opening clash against Arsenal, as the Cameroonian may not return by then.
Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton have both played in his absence, but Jason Wilcox has been searching for a new shotstopper as Bayindir could still leave the club.
Emiliano Martínez and Senne Lammens have been the two biggest targets to replace Onana for next season, but United are yet to submit an offer for either goalkeeper, despite the season drawing ever closer.
Rúben Amorim is believed to be happy with Onana, but having spent big money on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the Portuguese manager could also be on the search for a new goalkeeper.
United set to miss out on Victor
An earlier goalkeeper target for United was Botafogo’s John Victor, who impressed in the Club World Cup, as his side reached the Round of 16, but were defeated by Palmeiras.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils are set to miss out on the goalkeeper due to a formal offer from West Ham United worth just under £7 million.
Galatasaray and Everton were also said to be “keen” on Victor, but United only “monitored him” despite the interest they held in the opening weeks of the transfer window.
United could be forced to stick with Onana
While Aston Villa have already purchased a new goalkeeper, Martínez could be priced out of a move to Old Trafford if United continue to search for a new striker and a midfielder.
Recent reports suggest that Onana could be back as early as United’s last pre-season game against Fiorentina, meaning he would be available for the Premier League opener against Arsenal.
His performances last campaign left many fans unhappy with the No.24, but he could be set for another season as Amorim’s starting shotstopper, with further reinforcements needed in other areas.
If a goalkeeper is left until the end of the window, a transfer could depend on the sales of Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia, who could yet stay at United if an offer doesn’t arrive soon.
