Who has the power to sack Erik ten Hag out of Manchester United’s leadership team? We answer this question below.

Erik ten Hag is facing heavy criticism as Manchester United’s manager after the club suffered their third Premier League defeat in just six games this season.

The club sit 13th in the table, and a disappointing home draw against FC Twente in the Europa League opener fueled fan frustrations, with many now calling for the Dutchman to be sacked.

The 3-0 loss to Tottenham was a turning point, not just because of the embarrassing result at Old Trafford but also because of how disjointed and chaotic the team appeared, despite eight players in the lineup being signed during Ten Hag’s tenure.

The 3-3 draw against FC Porto on Thursday night has further compounded these calls, as the side have looked entirely lost under his instructions. They will now face Aston Villa away from home, who are fresh off beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

There is a lot of speculation surrounding Ten Hag’s future at United, and many reports have stated that he is only guaranteed the next two games before those at the club will reflect on the beginning of the season during the October internationals.

With Ten Hag’s job now on the line, some have started to wonder who has the genuine power to sack the Dutch boss, and according to The Athletic, we now have our answers.

The report explains that although United have a leadership team consisting of co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer, CEO Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and advisor Sir Dave Brailsford, only three of these have the power to make the decision.

Co-owners Ratcliffe and Glazer, along with Brailsford, have the authority to make and execute the decision.

Despite their vast influence at the club, Ashworth and Berrada can only recommend a course of action regarding Ten Hag’s future, although whatever recommendation they make will undoubtedly be considered.

“We talk every day. We are a union, and we made that commitment in the summer,” Ten Hag told reporters on Wednesday evening when asked about his communication with the leadership team.

More specifically about talks with Ashworth, Ten Hag added: “It’s not necessary to give me confidence. We talk every day about how we can improve this club, this team, improve the processes, the procedures, the connections. That is what we talk about.”
