Sir Alex Ferguson recommends top manager as Erik ten Hag replacement while Man United debating £17m decision
Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly recommended a top European manager as Erik ten Hag’s replacement as Manchester United debate a £17 million decision.
Erik ten Hag has endured a challenging start to the season, with Manchester United managing just three wins in their first eight matches across all competitions.
Consecutive 3-0 home defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham have only intensified the pressure on the Dutch manager in recent days, with rumours that he could be sacked in the next international break.
Sir Alex Ferguson recommends Allegri
According to fresh reports from Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Massimiliano Allegri is one of the options to take over from Ten Hag at United if he was to be sacked.
It was added that Sir Alex Ferguson has recommended Allegri as his preferred choice to take charge of the club should change become necessary. The pair were spotted together during last season’s Champions League final.
Allegri is currently a free agent after he was sacked by Juventus days after he won the Coppa Italia at the end of last season.
United debating £17m decision
Whether or not the Italian boss would be the man to take over is unknown, but it seems quite evident that United’s leadership are debating the managerial position after Ten Hag’s start to the season.
Yet, there will also be financial talks in relation to whether they sack Ten Hag or not after INEOS decided to extend the manager’s deal by a further year in the summer.
According to GOAL, had the club decided to let the manager go in the summer before his contract extension, it would have cost around £10 million.
However, with a deal now running until the summer of 2026, it would cost INEOS just over £17 million to move on from Ten Hag if they decided to in the coming weeks.
United were walking a financial tightrope in the summer and had to sell in order to buy in the transfer market.
Yet, this decision will ultimately not be defined by the finances involved, even if it will be something the leadership team take into consideration.
