Sergio Reguilón signed for Manchester United on a loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur until the end of the season on deadline day.

The Spanish left-back came in as an emergency option due to injuries to both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Shaw is expected to be out for a few months and so Erik ten Hag decided to strengthen the position in the short-term.

United were actually interested in Reguilon before his move to Spurs in the summer of 2020 but they opted to sign Alex Telles instead, who has since moved on to Saudi Arabia club Al Nassr.

Reguilon comes into the club as the only Spaniard in the first-team squad, following David de Gea’s departure and Alvaro Fernandez’s loan move to Granada.

The Reds formally had the Spanish trio of De Gea, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera at the club together and all three were massive hits with the Old Trafford faithful during their time at the club.

De Gea, who is still without a club following his United exit, has discussed what United is about to the new Spanish signing.

“I spoke a lot with David and he told me about the club,” Reguilón told club media.

“He told me you are coming to the best club in England. All these players [like De Gea] are legends over in Spain, because I follow a lot of the Premier League.

“David will always be a legend here and he told me about the club, the people that are here, the training ground, the stadium, the fans… everything,” he added.

“He said they are amazing, unbelievable. He only has amazing words for Manchester United.”

Reguilon made the bench for the 3-1 loss against Arsenal on Sunday but was an unused substitute on the day. Diogo Dalot played at left-back and impressed for the most part against the dangerous Bukayo Saka.
