Rúben Amorim is a “huge admirer” of Premier League outcast who would be “super option” at Man Utd

Rúben Amorim is said to be a “huge admirer” of a Premier League outcast, who would be a “super option” at Manchester United

Rúben Amorim’s unique 3-4-2-1 formation, compared to other Premier League teams, means that finding a player who perfectly suits the system is not an easy task.

For example, natural wingers like Alejandro Garnacho don’t really suit the system as Amorim chooses to play two attacking midfielders, with the wing backs instructed to hold the width.

While some wingers, like Amad, can drop back into midfield and play as a wing back, most attack-minded players are limited to one of the two No.10 positions behind the centre forward.

However, players like Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount are also competing for those positions, but they sometimes struggle to combine with the wing backs because they are used to playing in the centre.

Therefore, finding a hybrid player, like Matheus Cunha, who can play as a winger and an attacking midfielder, is crucial to maximising Amorim’s system. Cunha alone will not be enough, but another “superb option” is said to be of interest to the Portuguese manager.

Amorim is interested in Nkunku

As reported by The Sun, Chelsea attacker Christopher Nkunku is looking for a move away from the club, after seeing just 911 minutes in the Premier League this season.

Amorim and Manchester United are said to be reigniting their interest in Nkunku, after making a move for the Frenchman in January.

The former Sporting manager is said to be “a huge admirer” of Nkunku, with the attacking midfielder being a “superb option” for his system.

However, United will face competition for his signature from several other clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool, who could both look to play Nkunku as a striker, rather than a No.10.

Paris Saint-Germain and West Ham United are also said to be interested in the former RB Leipzig goalscorer, despite his missing 10 games through injury this season.

United should prioritise other deals

While Nkunku could be a good fit at United, his struggles with injuries and the high transfer fee that Chelsea would demand mean the risk of signing him is greater than the reward.

At 27 years old, the Chelsea number 18 doesn’t suit the profile of signings that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recruitment team are focusing on, mainly young players who are affordable but have potential.

Cunha looks set to join United sooner rather than later, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the deal is advanced in recent days.

Liam Delap also looks like he will be playing at Old Trafford next season, after Laurie Whitwell confirmed “face-to-face” talks have been approved by Ipswich Town.
