Ruben Amorim has a difficult call to make about one ‘very important’ Manchester United star who Ruud van Nistelrooy praised.

Earlier this month, Manchester United confirmed Ruben Amorim as the club’s new head coach and he will start his role next week.

The 39-year-old arrives at Old Trafford in challenging circumstances and will be eager to make improvements upon his arrival.

Many expect Amorim to implement his 3-4-3 formation with United, a system in which certain players could thrive.

However, others may find it difficult, and it’s likely the Portuguese manager will need to recruit players better suited to his formation to get the most out of the team.

Amorim’s difficult call

One of the players that may leave Amorim scratching his head is Diogo Dalot, who has been a mainstay in the team over the last two years.

The right-back does not seem to suit the wingback positions as well as Noussair Mazraoui, who has shown more composure and quality in the final third.

Yet, he also seems like one of the few players who will be physically prepared for the football Amorim wants to play. Could he play as a wide centre-back in the back three? Possibly.

But the decision about Dalot’s role has suddenly become more contentious following Mazraoui’s successful start to life at Old Trafford and it will be a call Amorim will need to make.

Van Nistelrooy praise for Dalot

Ruud van Nistelrooy provided strong praise for Dalot and the way in which he bounced back from a difficult miss in Erik ten Hag’s final game in charge against West Ham.

“Diogo is a very important member of the team. He is one of the leaders and is always training professionally,” Van Nistelrooy said after the win against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

“He is always there to help the team and I was delighted. His mentality is very strong.

“He was in a bad moment after the miss [against West Ham], but the day, after, in training, he was preparing and doing everything possible.

“It pays off in the end. A great assist and a good performance. I’m delighted to have him around.”
