Manchester United have received a setback in their pursuit of OGC Nice central defender Jean Clair Todibo.

Todibo, 23, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford over the last year, and the club might’ve looked to bring him last summer if Harry Maguire’s move to West Ham materialised.

However, the English defender ended up remaining within Erik ten Hag’s squad, and so the only central defensive addition was free agent Jonny Evans.

Yet, all five defenders for United have been injured at different points this season, and it has proven to be an area where the club can improve in the transfer window.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the French defender remains on the list at United. However, there have been developments with a Premier League rival ahead of the January transfer window.

The Italian journalist has stated that Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks to sign Todibo in January and that he is high on the North London club’s list.

Romano reiterated that it would not be an easy deal with the French club but that talks have begun and that Spurs have also spoken to the player’s camp in recent days.

Information from 90min has added Spurs have learnt that a deal for Todibo could be struck at £35 million and that they’re in ‘tentative contact’ with the French club.

Todibo has played 14 games for Nice so far this season as they sit second in Ligue 1, five points behind leaders PSG.
