Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has agreed with current Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag concerning Marcus Rashford.

Solskjaer who like Ten Hag managed Rashford throughout his time at Old Trafford, saw the ups and downs of the English attacker’s career first-hand.

During Solskjaer’s time at United, Rashford was United’s Premier League top goalscorer on one occasion in the 19/20 season. However, in Ole’s final season, he managed just four league goals, with Solskjaer sacked early in the campaign.

This season, Rashford has already beaten that tally, scoring five league goals in what has been a mixed season for the forward on the pitch and off it.

It was this lack of consistency that led former United boss Solskjaer to discuss Rashford’s future with reporters over the past week.

“Obviously, I managed Marcus [Rashford] for three years, and I know him,” Solskjaer told Reuters. “It’s not my job to go out and discuss his performances, but last season he was fantastic, and it’s about consistency in football.

“Marcus and many others haven’t hit the heights this season. I’m sure he had a wake-up call last week [following the nightclub incident and his fine], and hopefully, that will spur him on.

“Is it the manager’s job to get the best out of him, or is it mostly himself or any player’s responsibility to get the best out of yourself? I think that’s more it.

“He’s had a fantastic career, some ups and downs. Now we hope he’s going to hit that consistency because I know, and we all know there’s a top player there. It’s difficult to be at the top all the time, but it takes sacrifice.”

Solskjaer’s statements on Rashford being in charge of his own future mirror that of current United boss Ten Hag.

Ten Hag told reporters back in October of last year that Rashford returning to his best relies on him, “Working hard and if he invests every day, and goes into every game with the right focus.”
