Manchester United have reportedly turned their attentions to a Crystal Palace star for the January transfer window.
Manchester United’s January transfer window could be huge for the future of Rúben Amorim and several players at the club.
Jason Wilcox and the recruitment team will have to back Amorim with several signings if they still believe him to be the right man to lead United back up the Premier League.
A midfielder seems destined to join the club, especially given the reports linking Manuel Ugarte with a transfer away from Old Trafford in the January transfer window.
United will also be looking for defensive reinforcement, especially if Amorim is looking to switch to a back four on a permanent basis. He may need more natural right and left-backs, allowing Patrick Dorgu to play higher up the pitch.
Signings are needed across the pitch, and United are now confirmed to be eyeing a new forward.
United turn attentions to Mateta
Jean-Phillipe Mateta has been linked with a move to United for at least six months now, but after recent contract talks, he could be closer to joining Amorim’s squad now, more than ever before.
According to Football Insider, contract talks with Crystal Palace are stalling, and United are keeping close tabs on the France international’s situation to see if a move will become possible.
This comes after some fans called for the club to put in a move for the Frenchman as a “serious” statement of intent during the 2025 summer window.
While he has scored seven goals in the Premier League this season, Mateta hasn’t quite hit the heights of last season, so United may look for a cut-price deal if Palace accept the offer.
Brennan Johnson looks set to join Palace in the coming weeks. He is likely a replacement for Eberechi Eze, rather than Mateta, but it could help pave the way for the Frenchman, nonetheless.
United will need a forward
Joshua Zirkzee looks set to leave Old Trafford in the January window, with Roma and Everton leading the race for the Dutchman.
Zirkzee scored against Wolves, but was withdrawn at halftime, following another poor performance the game before against Newcastle United.

Mateta could take some of the responsibility from Benjamin Šeško’s shoulders, as the Slovenian continues to adapt to Premier League football.
The Crystal Palace striker could help United convert more chances, as he is known for his clinical nature.
