Michael Carrick reveals what it’s been like since taking charge of Manchester United as “unbelievable” claim made

Michael Carrick has revealed how his first days in charge of Manchester United have been, following the Manchester derby victory.

Very few Manchester United coaches have started as well as Michael Carrick did in his second stint in charge of the club.

United’s 2-0 win over Manchester City in the derby will be remembered by United fans for many years, especially given how poor United were in the final weeks of Rúben Amorim’s tenure.

Carrick’s first spell in charge of United, following Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s sacking, ended unbeaten, with an impressive win over Arsenal, and his second spell has started with even more brilliance from the former No.16.

While he only had three days of training before the derby, Carrick clearly had a huge impact on the squad, and it appears the squad have had a big impact on him.

Carrick reveals details about “unbelievable” group

Many would be forgiven for thinking it would be difficult for Carrick to go back to his former club during a difficult spell – heads could be dow,n and the squad may not be friendly, but it seems the truth is anything but.

“I think it’s always different inside to out, it always is,” said Carrick to BBC Sport. “But for me to come in and feel it, the players really care and want to learn and want to be helped. There’s not the egos where they think they know it all.

“We’ve got to push them as well and ask a lot from them. As a group, they’ve been unbelievable. The starters, the boys that were not involved, the subs, the ones that came on, everyone has been top drawer, and it all came together and it all came together nicely.

“t’s got to be a start, we’ve got another big game next week and we’ve got to build as we go through the season. We’re not getting carried away.”

Carrick must keep mood high

In the past, United’s players have been known to drop their heads and lose all hope when the club is struggling on the pitch. Even when a new coach comes in, it can be difficult for them to control the dressing room and improve the mood within the club.

Carrick, however, hasn’t had that issue. From the very outset, the squad seem happy and willing to right the wrongs of the season. On the squad, Carrick said: “I just felt like they were really desperate to do well, the boys.

“If anything, I was worried about the desperation over-spilling and making bad decisions because you’re so keen, but they managed it so well.

“To put on a performance like that today, it was a special day. It was a nice feeling.”
