Former Premier League defender Micah Richards has made a big Manchester United transfer call as Rúben Amorim gears up for the 2025 summer window.

With Rúben Amorim now leading Manchester United as their new head coach, sporting director Dan Ashworth and his recruitment team have begun preparations for the 2025 transfer window.

Amorim’s debut in charge saw the Red Devils held to a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town in the Premier League, with injuries forcing several players into unfamiliar roles.

Diogo Dalot featured as a left wing-back, Noussair Mazraoui stepped in as a central defender, and Amad Diallo filled in at right wing-back. United were missing four centre-backs for Sunday’s match and have consistently struggled with left-back availability in recent seasons.

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have endured persistent injury problems over the past 18 months, leading the club to want a new left-back in 2025.

Richards’ big call

While United are thought to be operating on a modest budget for 2025, former Premier League defender Micah Richards believes the club will still sign a host of new players in the summer.

“I don’t think he [Amorim] is going to get the players he wants in January, but I think in the summer, we are going to see five or six players come in now,” he told The Rest is Football podcast.

“I just believe that. I was a bit disappointed in the showing. That’s not the manager – he needs time to implement his style.

“It was almost like a fizzy drink. I expected so much; they started so well, and then it just fizzled out a bit. On another day, Ipswich could have scored four or five.”

Amorim’s priority positions

UtdDistrict understands that Rúben Amorim wants to sign two midfielders this summer, preferably a new attacking No. 10 and a deeper midfielder to operate in front of the defence.

This comes with Christian Eriksen likely to leave the club and Casemiro’s future remaining uncertain.

There are also reports that the club will look to sign a new striker in the coming months, although a move for any attacking player in January is unlikely.

Elsewhere, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the club have a three-man left-back shortlist as they look to upgrade the defence in the summer.
