Manchester United’s stance on Javi Guerra has been revealed, following earlier reports that suggested the Spanish midfielder was close to signing for Rúben Amorim’s side.
The dismal performance last season has seen many argue what Rúben Amorim’s priority should be in the transfer window, with attacking options being at the top of most people’s lists.
While Manchester United are yet to sign a natural centre forward, the £62.5 million signing, Matheus Cunha, could be an option through the middle if Jason Wilcox can’t find a suitable striker for Amorim.
Bryan Mbeumo could be the next through the door at Old Trafford, but the deal appears to have stalled in recent weeks, with some saying United are struggling to agree a final price for the forward.
After the Mbeumo deal is completed, the Red Devils could turn their attentions to a midfielder, with Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte both struggling for consistency last season.
Earlier on Monday, Italian journalist Daniele Longo stated that United are “close to signing” Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra.
United’s stance on Guerra revealed
Many fans were excited to hear of United’s interest in Guerra, as one of the few midfielders to complete over 50 take-ons and over 50 tackles last season, as per Statman Dave.
However, Nathan Salt has revealed that the reports stating that the Red Devils are “close to signing” Guerra are “wide of the mark.”
The Mail Sport journalist stated: “Told by sources in Valencia that any suggestion that Javi Guerra is close to a move to Manchester United is wide of the mark.”
“Club instead hopeful of getting him to sign a new deal later this week,” meaning United could have their full attention on completing the Mbeumo deal before looking for another target.
Another midfielder could still be signed this summer, with reports suggesting that Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi could be an option for Amorim’s side.
New recruitment team but same old United
When Sir Jim Ratcliffe purchased a stake in United, many thought that he would focus on improving the recruitment team and how the club is run in the transfer market.
Dan Ashworth and Wilcox joined the club before the 2024 summer transfer window in an attempt to improve United’s transfer strategy, but some similar signs are still occurring.
While the signings of Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro showed that United could do good business, it appears that the Red Devils can still only focus on one transfer at a time, unlike other clubs.
This theme has continued into this transfer window, with Amorim’s side spending almost a month attempting to sign Mbeumo and no other deals completed since Cunha joined the club.
