Manchester United suffer blow as Antony’s hidden clause is revealed after Real Betis move

Manchester United have suffered a financial blow, as a clause has been revealed in Antony’s sale to Real Betis.

At the start of the transfer window, Antony was named as part of a group of five outcasts that had to be sold before the start of the Premier League season, as he had no part to play in Rúben Amorim’s squad.

While the Brazilian had many chances to leave Old Trafford – with offers from Saudi Arabia and Europe – he remained at Manchester United until Deadline Day, when he finally returned to Real Betis.

A loan deal appeared more likely at the start of the transfer window, but Betis eventually managed to present a financial package that Jason Wilcox was happy with.

Antony will now be subject to a documentary about his move from United to Betis, and the drawn-out negotiation process that almost saw the move collapse.

Antony’s new sell-on clause revealed

When Antony joined Betis, many believed that United had a 50% sell-on clause for the Brazilian, meaning they would earn half of any future transfer fee Betis received for the right-winger.

However, The Express have reported that United will only receive 50% of the profit that Betis make on Antony, if they choose to sell him in the coming years.

The Spanish club reportedly paid £22.5 million for Antony, but they won’t have to pay this in full until certain add-ons are met, likely revolving around appearances and Champions League qualification.

The only way United will definitely receive a fee from Betis is if they choose to buy out the release clause. If they pay United another £22.5 million, the Red Devils would no longer have a release clause, and Betis would be entitled to the full transfer fee if they sell him.

A positive sign for Wilcox

While this new release clause is a blow for Wilcox, it remains a positive sign that United were able to offload so many outcasts this summer, as they have struggled to do so in previous years.

Even though Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford only left on loan, United’s transfer team – which is headed by Wilcox – is showing a competence they haven’t shown in years.

Wilcox still needs to focus on the sales of Andre Onana and Tyrell Malacia this summer, as transfer windows in Turkey and Saudi Arabia remain open for the time being.

Both have received fresh offers in recent days, and it will be a big boost for United’s finances if they can offload both outcasts.
