Manchester United provided a dominant display against FK Zalgiris in their UEFA Youth League opener this week.

The young Reds travelled away to Lithuania for their opening game in the European competition on Wednesday and won in style, with five goals scored.

While the Under-19s will only usually play in the competition when their senior teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League, United’s youngsters managed to secure their place by beating Chelsea to become U18 Premier League National champions.

On the night, where around 4,000 fans were in attendance, United won 5-2 with the goals coming from Gabriele Biancheri (x2), Ethan Williams (x2) and James Scanlon.

It puts Adam Lawrence’s side in a strong position for the return leg at the beginning of November back in England.

While all of the goals were pleasing, with some good build-up play from the Reds, it was Williams’ second goal of the night which stood out.

The game was not shown live but FK Zalgiris posted the highlights on their YouTube channel.

After Williams’ first goal was helped in by a slight deflection, the exciting winger needed no help when lining up his second strike.

Shea Lacey passed across to the wide man, who had tucked inside, just outside of the penalty area, and he produced a stunning strike which swerved into the far top corner.

All of the goals from the game can be watched below, with Williams’ impressive strike coming around 2:15 into the video.

United fans excited about youth

There is always a reason to be excited about United’s youth teams. These players, when talented enough, often get their chances in the first-team at Old Trafford.

Considering the likes of Harry Amass, Chido Obi-Martin, Ethan Wheatley and Habeeb Ogunneye were not involved in this game, it was great to see that so many players remain in and around the first-team.

The likes of Williams, Binacheri, Jack Fletcher and Lacey are just a few of the names who could really push their way forward in the coming months, with Erik ten Hag not afraid to get them involved with his squad at Carrington.

This crop of young talent is a really enjoyable group, and after winning three trophies last season, they will be eyeing success in the most prestigious European youth competition this term.
