Manchester United signing hit with fresh delay as “top-class” star not expected to make transfer until next week

One of Manchester United’s hopeful signings this week has been hit with a delay, with the “top-class” player now not expected to make a final decision until next week.

Manchester United are poised to confirm the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a five-year contract, with the Brazilian forward arriving for a fee of £62.5 million.

Cunha becomes Rúben Amorim’s first signing of the 2025 summer window and is seen as a crucial addition to an attacking line that has underperformed this season.

The transfer fee will be paid in three instalments, starting with an initial £20.8 million once the deal is finalised at the beginning of June.

The 26-year-old is expected to take up a role on the left side of United’s front three, overtaking Alejandro Garnacho, whose exit this summer now seems increasingly likely.

United hit with fresh delay in Delap transfer

With Cunha all but over the line, United are also looking to bring in Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap in a £30 million deal as the club’s second significant move of the summer.

However, they are facing serious competition from Chelsea, Everton, and Newcastle, with the player’s release clause deemed as one of the best value-for-money signings available this summer.

Having scored 12 Premier League goals in his maiden campaign in the competition last term, there was an initial expectation that “top-class” Delap would make his final decision on his next destination this week, having held talks with all four clubs, but this has now changed.

According to The Times, United no longer expect Delap to decide on his future until next week. However, the player is now expected to choose between United and Chelsea, with Newcastle and Everton likely out of the running.

Berrada speaks on United’s summer plans

Speaking prior to United’s 1-0 post-season friendly loss against ASEAN All-Stars on Wednesday, United CEO Omar Berrada issued a confident message that his club have a very clear plan in place this summer.

“Yeah, I can’t talk about specifics, but I can say we have been planning for many months now,” the Frenchman explained. “We were ready for all the different scenarios and now know what we need to do.

“We have a very clear idea where we need to invest in the squad to improve. So Jason [Wilcox, technical director], his team, and Rúben have been in talks, as I said, for many months.

“Now it’s a question of executing that plan and doing it in a way that is prudent but, at the same time, with ambition.”

Amorim himself recognised after the fixture that his team struggles to score amid another poor display from Rasmus Højlund, stating, “We have a lack of goals; we will try to assess that and be prepared for next season.”
