Manchester United set for Premier League transfer battle as Jason Wilcox eyes free agent deal

Manchester United could be set for a transfer battle for a free agent at the end of the 2025/26 season, as Premier League clubs eye a Jason Wilcox target.

Manchester United could be set for another busy summer at the end of the season, following an intense one last year. Jason Wilcox – United’s Director of Football – made five permanent signings in the summer, with lots of outgoing activity to make space for the new additions.

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were among the new additions this summer, and they have already made a huge difference to Rúben Amorim’s side. Cunha was sorely missed in United’s defeat to Everton on Monday evening; a player with his dribbling ability could’ve helped break down the opposition.

Another new signing to play a key role for Amorim this season is young Senne Lammens. The Belgian joined on Transfer Deadline Day and has been immense since his debut against Sunderland before the first international break of the season.

Wilcox, who was promoted to his current role after Dan Ashworth’s departure, has been excellent since his move from Southampton and could be set for another busy few months next summer. But, he could look to reduce his business with free transfers.

A free transfer can be agreed before the window opens and still make a huge difference the following year. Christian Eriksen – the last free transfer at Old Trafford – proved to be an excellent addition for Erik ten Hag.

Wilcox eyes Celik free transfer

United’s need for a new right-back could be paramount next season. Amad could become unhappy playing out of position, Diogo Dalot has struggled for consistency under Amorim, and Noussair Mazraoui seems to play closer to his full potential as a right-sided central defender.

TEAMtalk have now reported that United are eyeing AS Roma’s Zeki Celik, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season. He has also played in a back three and as a defensive midfielder – he could be a versatile option for Amorim if United return to European football next season.

However, a transfer won’t be easy. Firstly, several Premier League clubs – including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City – are also looking at the Roma right-back as a potential free transfer next summer.

There is also the issue of his importance at Roma. Celik is a key player for the Serie A league leaders, and they want to extend his deal for the following year, but Celik is not in a rush to agree on a new contract just yet.

It is thought that United are eyeing Celik as a right-wing-back option due to his stability and consistency. Perhaps, Wilcox is just searching for consistency due to Dalot and Patrick Dorgu’s form in recent weeks.

United should prioritise academy prospects

While the first team have issues at wing-back, the under-21s are more than stacked on both the left and right-hand sides.

On the left, Harry Amass is shining on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, while Diego Leon is impressing for Travis Binnion’s under-21s side, with fresh reports linking him to a January loan move. Dante Plunkett has also impressed for the under-18s, although he has struggled with injury issues since his move from Aston Villa.

On the right flank, Bendito Mantato has seriously impressed playing as both a winger and full-back, with several similarities to Amad. Jayden Kamason has also shown his potential, but he is currently out injured, with a return soon.

Rather than signing a new right-back, Amorim should look to give debuts to Mantato and Kamason during the African Cup of Nations. He should at least test their level before signing a new option.
