Manchester United have reportedly shortlisted a Serie A manager as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag amid a 3-0 loss against Tottenham.

Erik ten Hag‘s current role as manager of Manchester United is undergoing severe scrutiny following a third Premier League defeat in six games this season.

The side sit 12th in the league table and drew their opening Europa League tie at home against FC Twente, leading to many fans calling for the Dutch boss to be sacked.

The tie against Tottenham has been a particular turning point as, beyond the embarrassment of losing 3-0 at his own ground, the team Ten Hag selected looked disorganised, underwhelming, and chaotic despite containing eight players who have made their debuts under the manager.

According to the Daily Star, Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi is now being considered a serious contender for the job should Ten Hag be sacked.

“Ratcliffe knows United are treading water under the Dutchman, and would target Inzaghi along with Gareth Southgate if he decided to make a change. Southgate has a lot of admirers at United and is close friends with Ashworth,” Chief Sports Writer Jeremy Cross wrote.

“But United bosses have also been impressed with the job Inzaghi has done since taking charge of Inter Milan in 2021. Inzaghi has won five trophies with the Italian giants, including the Serie A title last season.”

Despite this, news broke on Monday morning that United are set to remain with Ten Hag in charge for at least the next two fixtures against FC Porto and West Ham ahead of the international break.

After the loss against Spurs, Ten Hag explained to the media that he is not worried about losing his job as he and the club’s leadership team remain on the same page.

“No, I am not thinking about this,” he responded on Sunday when asked if he was worried that the club’s board may choose to sack him.

“We all made this decision to stay together in summer, as ownership group, leadership group,” he added.

“Also we made the decision, after a clear review, what we have to improve as an organisation and how to construct a squad.

“All decisions made in togetherness, also knowing it would take some time. We are all there on one page, one boat, the ownership, the leadership group, the staff, players too.”
