Manchester United reignite their interest in former Premier League midfielder as Rúben Amorim reveals midfield problems

Manchester United are set to restart their interest in one former Premier League midfielder, after Rúben Amorim’s comments in the aftermath of the 0-0 draw against Leeds United in the pre-season opener

When Rúben Amorim joined Manchester United, many fans wondered how the current squad would adapt to his 3-4-2-1 system, especially the wingers, who were now without a natural position in the side.

Alejandro Garnacho found himself as a regular in the attacking midfield positions, but his comments after the Europa League final have made a return to the side impossible.

The Argentine has already been replaced at Old Trafford, with the new signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo set to play in the two No.10 positions, behind the centre forward.

Bruno Fernandes will likely drop back into central midfield to allow the two new signings a starting role, but this raises further questions about Amorim’s requirements for his double pivot.

Amorim makes midfield transfer plea

United began their pre-season against Leeds United in Stockholm last week – the fans were excited about seeing the Red Devils return to action, but they were left disappointed by a 0-0 draw against Daniel Farke’s side.

In the aftermath of the game, Amorim said: “It was a pre-season game. The gaps between our sectors was sometimes too big. We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park and you can feel it is hard to win and bring the ball.”

Perhaps, the midfield combination of Casemiro and Fernandes left United too open in the middle of the park, with neither player a natural at covering ground across the defensive third anymore.

Manuel Ugarte is known for his ground coverage, but Amorim appears to favour the Brazilian over his former Sporting CP player in the middle of the park, potentially suggesting he needs a new midfielder to win the ball back.

Jason Wilcox’s recruitment team have reportedly been in talks with several midfield targets this summer, including Morten Hjulmand and Corentin Tolisso, but he may return to a different option instead.

United reignite interest in Luiz

While they are yet to sign a midfielder, United remain interested in an engine room signing before the window slams shut, and they look set to reignite their interest in Douglas Luiz.

Luiz, formerly of Aston Villa and Manchester City, has reportedly not joined the Juventus squad for pre-season, and Corriere dello Sport have said: “the relationship between Douglas and the Old Lady ends here.”

While the report states that Everton, Nottingham Forest and West Ham United are interested in Luiz, United could be set to re-enter the race if a deal becomes a possibility.

Luiz could partner Casemiro or Fernandes in the middle of the park next season, perhaps solving the “lack of pace” claims Amorim made after the Leeds match.

Juventus want to sell the midfielder this summer, but United may offer a loan with an obligation to buy deal as an alternative; this could still be accepted.
