Manchester United receive setback as transfer target holds talks with Champions League club after striker departure

One Manchester United transfer target has held talks with a Champions League club, while he remains on the options list for Rúben Amorim

Manchester United are searching for several positions this summer to improve Rúben Amorim’s squad after their abysmal performance in the Premier League last season.

One key target in the transfer window is a new centre forward to take the burden away from Rasmus Hojlund, who scored just 10 goals last season despite making 52 appearances.

Joshua Zirkzee also struggled to impress when playing as the striker ahead of Hojlund, but he could prove to be a vital asset next season with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo playing behind him.

United have been linked with several options, with Liam Delap appearing to be almost destined to sign for the club, until Chelsea joined the fight for the striker.

Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres was another option, but his high fee appeared to force the Red Devils into looking for cheaper options, including in the free market.

Calvert-Lewin holds talks with Newcastle

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is available on a free transfer this summer after his deal at Everton expired. United have listed him as an option but are yet to speak to the player’s representatives.

As per Talksport, Newcastle United have held a long-time interest in Calvert-Lewin and have already held talks with the Englishman this summer to attempt to secure his signature.

Everton’s former No.9 will likely play backup to Alexander Isak if he doesn’t leave Eddie Howe’s side in the transfer window, especially after the departure of Callum Wilson was confirmed on Monday.

While Champions League football will be a key factor for Calvert-Lewin, he will want to remain a starting striker, which he could be at Old Trafford if the recruitment team continue to struggle to complete more than one deal at a time.

Leeds United were also interested in the 28-year-old, but his wage demands proved to be too high for the newly promoted side, even with their new backing from global energy drink company, Red Bull.

Striker signing crucial for Amorim

While United fans have shown their support for Amorim in his first season, with the countless renditions of “He’ll bring the glory days again…”, the manager needs to improve the results on the pitch if he wants to maintain his current level of support.

Due to the success under Sir Alex Ferguson especially, United fans expect the club to fight for the Premier League every season, while playing exciting football.

Without a proven goalscorer leading the line, the Red Devils could outplay the opponent but fail to take victory because they simply can’t put the ball in that net.

Even with a poor defence, you can win games by outscoring the opposition, but you can never win a game of football without scoring. A striker is needed and fast.
