Manchester United fans have provided a mixed reaction to Paul Scholes’ scathing comment on Jesse Lingard’s Instagram page.

Jesse Lingard has been without a club since July 2023 after he was released from his one-year deal with Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

Lingard played for Manchester United for 22 years after joining the academy at the age of just seven years old, and played 232 times for his childhood club, most famously scoring an epic winner in the 2016 FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

He had a six-month spell on loan at West Ham, where he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 appearances, but once he arrived back at United, he found himself void of game time and left the club for free in search of pastures new.

After leaving Forest in the summer, Lingard has been linked with a whole host of clubs, mainly from those in the Middle East, and although he has not yet found a team, he has been training consistently in the gym.

However, former United midfielder Paul Scholes believes that the player is just ‘f***ing about’, and in a scathing Instagram comment in reply to photos of Lingard in the gym, Scholes has told the player to “actually play football”.

“Are you just gonna f*** about in the gym or are you gonna actually play football?” Was the comment Scholes left on Lingard’s Instagram on Monday evening.

Scholes is known to be a fairly straight-forward, say-it-as-he-sees-it type pundit, and United fans have provided a mixed reaction to his comment. Some fans have either found the comment hilarious or at least agree with the sentiment.

However, others have branded the comment “weird”, feeling that Scholes is taking it too far with his words.
