Manchester United make transfer decision on star ‘fighting for his future’, says David Ornstein

Manchester United have seemingly made their transfer decision on a star fighting for his future at Old Trafford as Rúben Amorim’s feelings are clear.

In the summer transfer window, Manchester United will look to move on several first-team players to fund potential new signings.

Reports have linked several players to moves away from the club, including first-choice players like Andre Onana. Multiple outlets have linked the Cameroonian with a move to Saudi Arabia, following inconsistent performances during his time at United.

Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton both look set to retire following an injury-filled 2024/25 season.

Mason Mount is another United player who has struggled with his fitness this season. Since the Englishman’s £60 million move from Chelsea, he has been unable to play consistent football due to his frequent injuries.

However, Rúben Amorim famously said, “I love that kid”, when referring to Mount during his first weeks at the club. Now the club have revealed their stance on the attacking midfielder.

United set to keep Mount this summer

As reported by David Ornstein for The Athletic, Mount is likely to remain at United in the summer transfer window despite being listed as one player who is fighting for his future at the club.

“I don’t expect Mason Mount to leave”, said Ornstein. “Manchester United will be focused on keeping him fit and bringing the best out of him because they think he is a great fit for Ruben Amorim’s setup and style.”

This aligns with Amorim’s words at the beginning of the year. While talking to MUTV, he said, “He played in this system [at Chelsea], so it’s perfect for him. I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy.”

It is clear that as long as Mount can stay fit, he will have a place in Amorim’s United team, but his injuries continue to be a concern.

Mount needs to prove his fitness

While it is clear the United manager wants Mount to succeed, if he can’t prove his fitness, he simply won’t be able to give him an opportunity.

Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee currently occupy the two attacking midfield roles, the position Mount would be fighting for. Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo have also played there this season, both impressing when they have. Amad was considered United’s player of the season before his injury, playing on the right of the front three, the position Mount played his best football in for Chelsea.

Not only does Mount have to stay fit, but he has to perform better than those competing for the same position.

With more than five players to fight with, and his injury concerns, Mount could find it very difficult to play consistent football for United anytime soon.
