Manchester United ‘make decision’ on André Onana’s future after ‘agreeing personal terms’ with Senne Lammens

Manchester United have made a decision on Andre Onana’s future at Old Trafford after they agreed personal terms with Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Manchester United have been without Andre Onana in the matchday squad since the Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur last season, with Altay Bayindir starting the last Premier League game and the first match this year.

Tom Heaton and the Turkish goalkeeper had to share the minutes in pre-season as Onana was out injured, with an issue he may have picked up on the post-season tour of Asia.

Despite Onana’s injury, United haven’t yet signed a new goalkeeper, with Rúben Amorim said to be happy with his three goalkeeping options, although this could change if Jason Wilcox sells more of the outcasts who aren’t training with the first team.

A midfielder is seen as a bigger priority for United, but a goalkeeper signing should not be ruled out if enough sales are made before the end of the transfer window.

United agree personal terms with Lammens

Despite some reports suggesting that there is “nothing imminent” regarding a move for Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, talkSPORT have reported that personal terms have already been agreed with Lammens.

It is understood that Lemmens would be brought in to compete for the starting spot, rather than joining as the outright No.1, with Bayindir and Onana still fighting for the first-choice position.

TalkSPORT have also stated that Onana is expected to remain at Old Trafford, even if Lammens joins the club, and the two will work together.

The future of Bayindir is unknown, but the Turkish goalkeeper was linked with a move away from United for the majority of the summer. However, starting on the opening day could suggest he will also be in the fight for a starting place.

Expect a goalkeeping clearout next summer

With Lammens possibly joining the club, United will have four senior goalkeepers in the squad, as well as several promising shotstoppers in the academy.

If Onana isn’t the guaranteed starter by the end of the season, he is likely to search for a new club so he can return to his former levels as a Champions League finalist.

Bayindir will be in a similar situation, as he wants to be the first-choice goalkeeper to secure a spot in the Turkey side and return to his promising level that saw United buy him from Fenerbahçe.

Lammens could face competition from young Radek Vitek next season. The Bristol City loanee has started his Championship career very well and could be ready for minutes at Old Trafford next season.
