Manchester United are aiming to add to their attacking depth ahead of next season, as Rúben Amorim prepares for his first full season in charge at Old Trafford
Now in the midst of a hot transfer window, Manchester United continue their search for a centre forward, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both linked to moves away from the club after their poor seasons in front of goal.
With targets Liam Delap and Hugo Ekitike being snapped up by other Premier League clubs, United are facing increasing pressure to secure a frontman for 2025/26.
United have been in the market for a recognised centre forward to fill a place in the starting eleven, with new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo expected to play behind the striker.
The recruitment team have spent the majority of the summer working on the Mbeumo transfer, meaning Viktor Gyokeres and other linked targets have already moved clubs, but Benjamin Sesko remains on the market.
With Alexander Isak searching for a new club, Newcastle United appear to have made an approach for Sesko, so the Red Devils may be forced into exploring alternative options up front.
United explore deal for Gueye
L’Equipe have reported that United have made contact for 18-year-old Idrissa Gueye, who currently plays his football for newly promoted French side FC Metz. After signing from Senegalese side Generation Foot, Gueye played a crucial role in securing promotion, as Metz bested Reims in the Ligue 1 relegation play-offs.
Scoring six times and recording one assist in twenty matches, the striker has reportedly caught the eye of United, as manager Rúben Amorim intends to build a competitive squad for an imperative season.
Though Gueye may not be completely first-team ready, Jason Wilcox and the team could decide it is worth a gamble, similar to the signings of Sekou Kone last summer and Diego Leon this year, continuing his young player transfer approach at Old Trafford.
With both Hojlund and Zirkzee underperforming, Gueye could fill the centre forward role; though young and unpolished, his high potential is obvious and may be worth the risk.
While hoping to avoid being priced out of a potential signing, United face pressure from Borussia Dortmund, who have also been monitoring the 18-year-old.
Gueye could rival Obi for a first-team spot
After an extensive transfer saga with Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chido Obi has registered eight appearances for the Reds so far. Despite not scoring yet, he has the potential to be United’s future No.9.
If Wilcox signs Gueye this transfer window, there will be a few obstacles in the way of securing a first-team spot, including 17-year-old Obi.

However, Zirkzee and Hojlund could both still leave the club, with numerous European clubs reportedly wanting both of the strikers.
If the pair leave, first-team opportunities will become less scarce, meaning there is a pathway for a talented forward to claim that spot as United’s frontman – Gueye could claim a stake in that race.
