Fabrizio Romano has said “Manchester United have not made any bid” for one potential Andre Onana replacement after learning of the Cameroonian’s injury
Andre Onana’s injury has put Manchester United in a tricky spot this summer as it looks like the goalkeeper will miss the entirety of pre-season, and potentially the opening fixture against Arsenal.
While Altay Bayindir could take his place in between the sticks, it looks like he won’t be given the nod for pre-season because reports suggest he is seeking a move away from Old Trafford to become a starting goalkeeper.
The only other options currently in Rúben Amorim’s squad are Tom Heaton, who recently signed a one-year contract extension, or trusting a young goalkeeper like Radek Vitek or Dermot Mee.
Looking for another goalkeeper was always a possibility for United this summer, even before the injury to Onana, as Amorim may want a new shotstopper to begin his rebuild at Old Trafford.
Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez appear to be the two options that Jason Wilcox and the recruitment team are considering.
Romano issues Martínez transfer update
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has issued on Emiliano Martínez’s potential move to United this summer, stating that “Manchester United have not made any bid. Aston Villa sources also guarantee that they’ve not received any official bid from Man Utd.”
“Man United spoke to Martinez’s representatives several times to be informed about the situation of the player. But this already happened in June, it’s not yesterday or today or this week. In June, they had conversations about the situation of Emi Martinez.”
“Now Andre Onana is injured, but it’s not a super long injury, [his recovery] is a matter of weeks. So let’s see how this conversation will continue, but what’s important to say is at the moment, there are still no club-to-club negotiations.”
“But Man United are aware of the situation of Emi Martinez. He could be open to joining Man United even if they don’t play European football this season.”
“This now depends on United, but at the moment I’m not aware of any concrete negotiations or anything close to being completed.”
Amorim could better spend money elsewhere
Now the signing of Bryan Mbeumo appears to be completed, United will have spent over £120 million this summer, with no outgoings and pre-season about to begin.
Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo have both demanded fees of over £60 million, and several players are still needed at Old Trafford before the window closes for the summer.

United’s interest in a midfielder has been well documented this summer, having been linked with both Douglas Luiz and Corentin Tolisso in recent days, and the need for a striker is greater than it has been before, with Rasmus Hojlund linked with several clubs.
Martínez does reportedly have a release clause, but this money needs to be spent on a centre forward, especially if Hojlund leaves and Joshua Zirkzee is the only senior striking option.
