Manchester United eye “impressive” youngster as Rúben Amorim returns to Sir Alex Ferguson transfer strategy

Manchester United are interested in a young defender who is “so impressive”, looking to return to a transfer strategy used by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United appear to have changed how they operate in the transfer market since Sir Jim Ratcliffe purchased a stake in the club, and this trend looks set to continue.

Now that the transfer window has closed in England, United can only focus on selling players to certain countries. However, they can begin preparations for the January transfer window.

While United rarely make signings in the winter transfer window, Jason Wilcox has shown that he is willing to if the right deal becomes available, as it did with Patrick Dorgu at the start of this year.

With the majority of Amorim’s outcast players moving on, Rúben Amorim may have money to spend in January and could look to add to his side, especially if United are playing well and challenging for the European spots.

United eye move for Lawlor

Dylan Lawlor – a teenage Welsh central defender – broke into the Cardiff City side last season, making an appearance in the Championship, but this season he has started all six League One games.

EFLAnalysis have reported that United – along with Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle United, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig – are tracking Lawlor’s progress in League One this season.

His performances this season earned him a call-up to the senior Wales squad during the international break, and Lawlor filled in for former United target Joe Rodon against Kazakhstan.

Former Liverpool and Manchester City player Craig Bellamy, via The Guardian Series, said: “He was so just so impressive, and we needed him to be because we were fully aware of the pull-outs.

“Joe Rodon was gone, and there’s times you look and think, ‘how are we going to cope without Joe because he’s such an immense player for us?’”

With the window now closed, United can’t make a move for Lawlor until January, but they may be forced into an early bid during the winter window if other Premier League sides come calling.

United return to Sir Alex Ferguson strategy

In the days of Sir Alex Ferguson, United very rarely spent huge money on a signing from abroad, as they have done in recent years, but instead chose to look for cheaper signings in English football.

On occasion, this would extend into the lower leagues – Denis Iwin from Oldham Athletic, Dion Dublin from Cambridge United and Roy Keane, whose Nottingham Forest side had just been relegated – and to great effect.

In more recent times, United have also signed Nick Powell and Daniel James from EFL clubs and could return to this strategy under Amorim with Lawlor.
